ambush (PodNews developer Jean-Olivier Lanctot-David) wrote in with this:
I saw a pic on a Dutch site... There's an article I cant read.... but can see the iPod 1.2 pic for sure ( it's not a real life screenshot shot so it could be fake OR a screenshot of the iPod emulator apple uses.) can someone translate it...
Update: wallsaroundme thinks he's got the gist of the Dutch post. We're certain the image is a fake.
Update Sunday, June 02, 2002: mendeljev has provided a full translation of the Dutch post:
We just got a tip from someone who wants to remain anonymous. He visited Apple's own iPod site yesterday, and noticed a new update that someone at Apple must have put online by accident. He tried downloading the update, but was unsuccesful, as it wsn't actually on the server. What the site did mention was tha fact that the new iPod update (1.2) will support date and time, a calendar and a visual graphic equaliser, like in Itunes. He was also able to get an image from the site, which can be found here...

Re: iPod Software 1.2 ?
prolly fake.
Now a days you can't really distinguish it.
Lamers want to get attention.. traffic on their sites. the bad way. gah. lost hopes. gah.
PS iPoding: correct my typos next time... :)
Re: iPod Software 1.2 ?
way to high res to be from an ipod, right? can the iPod even make more than two colors? and look how perfectly cut the edges are. and what does the ipod emu look like? that would be great
an iPod emulator .
Re: iPod Software 1.2 ?
says some one who wishes to be anonymous found that for a short period of time this image for new apple software was on apple's page... i think. and as ipoding mentioned it says something about a calender and something graphical (like ipoding says EQ). and ambush- i think they question it's reliability as well.
this would explain the beautiful quality of the shot. but would 1.2 come out before 1.1.x? seems too tough for the iPod's proc, doesn't it?
Re: iPod Software 1.2 ?
There's nothing wrong with a little fun, speculation, and hope. I think the iPod can easily run a clock and calendar and have more games. Hopefully it will also have custom EQ settings. If the person who created the pic had thought it out some more, they would also have included bitrate display on the side opposite "1 of 675". But I don't think it has enough power to do a graphic EQ, and that just takes up battery life anyway for extra and needless processing. Also, take a look at the time display...the time remaining is no longer there.
Yes, the iPod can do 4 shade grayscale in addition to plain white, so it has 5 shades it can display total.
Re: iPod Software 1.2 ?
The image is absolutely NOT captured from iPod or the emu. Almost certain it's the one dapper did, and positive it's a modification (or replication) of the Smash Mouth - All Star one at Apple's iPod page (Apple's says "6 of 157" while this one says "1 of 675".)
Way back when, we posted an image...

I hope it's not a fake, having all that would be cool.
Re: iPod Software 1.2 ?
Definitly fake. The ipod cant display two colors.
oh and.. I'm not sure the ipod could do it. I mean it's not powerful enough. Oh and these excuses for making mock up images ( I went on apple's site and there was this but then I refreshed and it was gone ) is very lame. Another claims he saw the new G4 at apple's site ( go to rumortracker.com ) and and If you want my opinion the graphical EQ is pretty useless.
Re: iPod Software 1.2 ?
oh and BTw Phil, If the ipod can display more than 1 color then I never saw it. Because I have my ipod right in front of me and i'm checking everything on the ipod everthing is one color. sorry. fake 99.99% sure.
Re: iPod Software 1.2 ?
It seems that the iPod emu apple uses *can* show 2 diff colors... I zoomed 300% on some of the images at the official apple site and yes there are 2 colors. But now on my ipod I dont see 2 diff colors. If the ipod im holding right now can display more than two colors then the image MAY be legit but there again.. It's prolly fake. everyone can do fake like that. At least ipoding had real life screenshot of 1.1... CMON IPODING WE WANT 1.2 or whatever screenshots!! yeah!!
Re: iPod Software 1.2 ?
iPod can too display two colors - black and a light gray. Plug it into you AC adapter and watch the charging indicator on its screen. Gray bars/black bars in the shape of a battery
Re: iPod Software 1.2 ?
Go into the diagnostic mode and do the display test. That will show you the capabilities of the display.

Re: iPod Software 1.2 ?
a few notes:
the ipod's processor is clocked at 90 mhz.
look at the time. the supposed 1.2 software has time elapsed. the ipod 1.1 software has time elapsed and time remaining.
conclusion:
sooooo fake.
Re: iPod Software 1.2 ?
but that shows four colors or three whatever you want to say
Re: iPod Software 1.2 ?
90? where'd you find that?
Re: iPod Software 1.2 ?
Go into the diagnostic mode (reset by holding down Menu and Play, then hold down FF and RW and center button). Go down to LCM, press the center button. Then keep pressing play, and it'll go through several sreens, one of which shows 4 shades of gray. The lightest shade might be complete white or a very light gray, so it's 4 or 5 shades it can show.

Re: iPod Software 1.2 ?
I believe found it in the June issue of Macaddict.
Re: iPod Software 1.2 ?
If it can show 5 then it can show 8...the number of shades of gray is defined by the number of bits per pixel. 2 bits = 4 colors, 3 bits = 8. Typically you'll use either 2 or 4 bits (16 shades) because it's easier to program.
Re: iPod Software 1.2 ?
You know, the iPod is just a little computer with some basic software....it has DUAL (yes, like the new G4s.... :D ) 90Mhz ARM processors, 32MB of RAM and a 5GB Hard Drive, plus a small screen, I/O ports and controls! That's more than enough to run many small programs, including a small visual display. I can think of several games that would work on an iPod, even with the limited control scheme (space invaders/centipede, asteroids maybe).
Sooner or later, I'll get around to Photoshopping a screen suggesting a way the interface could work with all these new functions. I think that a small sub-menu near the bottom of the screen might work well.
Games could be added in the settings menu, or (to avoid bloating) in a menu of their own.'
Anyway, here's a topic for posting features: http://www.ipoding.com/modules.php?op=modload&name=XForum&file=viewthrea...
