While working to format "raw" 1.8 inch disks (i.e. non-Apple installed HDD) we managed to get a new line to show up on iPod's "Info" screen. We have known that iPod supports filesystems other than HFS+, including the Windows/DOS FAT filesystem, since November 2001 and now we can see where it will(?) display the type in use… Read on for the image…

Re: Portents Things To Come
Yes, I've done this too a few months ago. The new lines showed up when I put in unformatted drives with the firmware copied over. But will the iPod read data off non-HFS+ disks? I never tried formatting with FAT and putting files on though.
BTW, the $99 Firefly drives are still available at Apple Stores, although not at the online store. I just went to an Apple Store yesterday to return one I bought, and they still had a few left.
Re: Portents Things To Come
Have done FAT and it works in disk mode, mounts in iTunes. Didn't work in audio mode at the time, have some ideas on making it work, but need to get these disks working properly first.
The Palo Alto Apple Store was out of FireFly and said they didn't know if they would have more…
[Note: Phil knows what he's doing! Mess with iPod's disk at your own risk!]
